Year 3 Curriculum Newsletter

Summer 1 2017

 

Literacy – We will be looking at poetry and persuasion. We will be looking at the film WALL – E to help us develop our ideas around these topics. We will also focus on or spellings and punctuation.

Numeracy – We are focusing on Calculations  in a range of contexts and problem solving. We will be introducing new methods to work out calculations and look at place value of numbers.

Science Animals including humans. We are focusing on diet and healthy options. We will also look at nutrition for both animals and humans.

Geography – Investigate Manchester. We are looking into the local area in relation to other areas within Manchester.

R.E. – This half term we will be continuing to look at “Why people pray”.

P.H.S.E. – Our topic is Drugs education and safety. The children will understand how to keep safe and distinguish between right and wrong.

Spanish – We will be learning about food and drink> Spanish foods and look at tasting some of these foods and saying if we like or dislike them.

D&T – Food. Looking at nutrition and cooking. We will also be looking at investigating bread making and making sandwiches. This links to our science topic.

Computing – Taught by Mr Heap

Music – Taught by Mrs Morgan

 

  • P.E. will be on Wednesday morning so please make sure you have your kit with you. We will be working outside this half term.
  • Homework will be given out on a Thursday and expected back in no later than Tuesday of the following week.
  • Spellings are given on a Wednesday and need to be learnt for the following Wednesday.

Spring 1 2017

 

Literacy – We will be looking at poetry and language play. We will also be looking at traditional tales focusing on ‘The Rabbit Who Stole the Fire’.

Numeracy – We are focusing on Problem solving in a range of contexts. Shape and position. Statistics and interpreting data.

Science Light. We will investigate day and night and shadows.

Geography – Rainforests. Looking all aspects of rainforests- species and environment.

R.E. – We will look at why Jesus is inspiring.

P.H.S.E. – Good to be me.

Spanish – We will be learning about animals and pets. We will also be looking at saying what we like and do not like about them.

Computing – Taught by Mr Heap

Autumn 2 2016

 

Literacy – We will be looking at Non-chronological reports focusing on ‘dragon writing’. We will look at paragraphing, drafting and organising work.

Numeracy – We are focusing on Fractions and decimals – Being able to recognise them, writing them and show them.  Calculations – multiplication and division including solving problems.

Science Forces and Magnets. We will be investigating them, examine them and carry out tests including fair tests.

History – WW2. Where it happened, when it happened, how it happened, what leaders were involved, the Blitz and children of the war and their life.

R.E. – We will continue our work on Christianity.

P.H.S.E. – Going for Goals. We will also look at bullying and refugees.

Spanish – The calendar and Celebrations. We will look at saying days and months of the year, simple instructions, Christmas in Spanish and singing Spanish songs.

Year 3 Curriculum Newsletter

Autumn 1 2016

 

Literacy – We will be looking at Narratives, concentrating on adventure stories. We will look at the plot in stories, how adventure stories are written and write some of our own.

Numeracy – We are focusing on Place value – counting forwards and backwards from a given number, more/less than a given number; Calculations – adding/subtracting 2/3 digit numbers mentally and in written form, multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8 and Problem solving.

Science Rocks and soils. Looking at types of rocks and soils, which soils are where and investigating soils.

Geography – Rivers. Where rivers originate from, where they are and inquiries about rivers.

R.E. – Christianity. What people believe, what is the Bible, about Jesus and his influences for Christians.

P.H.S.E. – New beginnings.

Spanish – A New Start. We will look at saying hello to each other, introducing ourselves, asking how people are and replying.

Computing – Linking to our Geography work on rivers.
